The 16th St. Nicholas Tournament is behind us

Just before Christmas, on Saturday, December 21, the St. Nicholas Taekwon-do Tournament was held for the 16th time. This event combines a sports competition with a family festival. This year, 197 competitors took part, which is over 21 more people than last year. If we added their siblings and guardians, it would make quite a large number.

Everything officially began at 9:00 a.m., when the Małe Smoki began arriving at the sports hall. However, for this to happen, we had started organizing everything two months earlier, and on the day of the tournament, our instructors and helpers (trainees and parents) began working at 7:00 a.m. The Małe Smoki had to complete an obstacle course, where they performed exercises on a coordination ladder, a forward roll, kicks on a pad, and broke a board. At the end of the course, speed-kicking challenges awaited them as a separate competition. Additionally, those who wished could use their flexible bodies and compete for a medal in the splits. Some parents of the Małe Smoki did not want merely to participate passively in the tournament and signed up for soft-stick fights. This year, the men came out on top, taking all the podium places.

Four events were prepared for children, younger juniors and cadets: patterns, speed-kicking challenges, sparring and the splits. The children had soft-stick fights; the younger juniors could choose between soft-stick and semi-contact; and the cadets competed in semi-contact and light-contact. Each was awarded medals separately. All of this took place on 5 mats led by Rafał Żelazko, a contract referee of ZS PUT.

The festival section was full of activity this year as well. There was a photo booth so that everyone could commemorate this wonderful day. The inflatable pirate ship with a slide and the inflatable obstacle course were very popular. Children could also have their faces painted, shoot a bow, leave with a balloon dog, or eat something delicious at our buffet. See you next year!
